Oh dear, it's happened again. This email arrived today:
Hello,
I am currently doing link exchanges with a Plastic Surgery site. I would like to do link exchanges with you.
Your links will be placed on this page (the page is new so there is no PR but it will get alot of PR soon):
http://www.francecamping.com/partners.html
And here is the detail to add to your page:
<a href="http://www.francecamping.com" target="_blank">Camping</a><br />Visit our Camping site in France.
Thank you,
Quentin Lederer
I wonder what else 'camping in France' brought up on their search?

Camping in France
Alright, what a cool Album. One of the first TVP albums readily available in the States.steve69 wrote:Is 'francecamping' a euphemism??
I have a copy, (somewhere), on cassette, of a translation of the French to English liners notes. Back in like '92 an ex of mine took it to her French Teacher. Apparently the teacher could not translate some of the "slang" and it was left to the imagination.. ...

What happens is that some people use software to collect sites that match their keywords, then they send emails asking for link exchanges. In theory you are supposed to check the site before sending an email, and then tailor the email to the specific site. Of course when you have a technique that works with a little effort there are always a whole load of morons using a similar technique that almost never works but which gets results because it's no effort at all and they never have any come back from the millions of people whose time they waste.
It used to be the bane of my life when I did site promotion as a freelance. I'd get a contract, then the client would dig around a bit and ask abput automatic software to do the same job. I'd point out that mostly what the software does automatically is to piss people off. They would then look at the basic maths. I could send out 50 or so link requests a day. The software could send out thousands. I cost more per day than the software cost to buy. So they buy the software and end the contract. What they don't do is the important bit of maths. Which is that my link requests would generate between 10 and 15 decent links a day. Whereas the software would generate a lot of emails and maybe 10 adequate links a year.
On the other hand I should be grateful to it for reducing the amount of time I spent working for morons.
